Dyan Reaveley – Art Journal Cover

Good Morning everyone!

Please welcome Roz and her blog post πŸ™‚

Textured Cover for Art Journal
Materials…..
  • Dyan Reaveley art journal 30x23cm
  • a magazine cut out of a pretty face
  • scrap booking papers
  • Glossy Mod Podge
  • Glossy Accents
  • Texture paste
  • Donna Downey chrysanthemum 6×6 stencil
  • ribbon and yarn- for tassels
  • diamante self adhesive jewels for her earrings,
  • buttons and lace,
  • the tissue tape to bind the edges,
  • the black Pilot Permaball pen to highlight the eyeliner and eyelashes
  • acrylic paints
  • a key and chain trinket
  • Matt Spray finishing sealer (available in store – not online)
  • Dyan Reaveley Dylusions ink sprays
Method-  I have torn up and pasted pieces of scrap booking papers onto the journal cover as a base. I used matt Mod podge as the adhesive both on the cover before sticking the paper and also some on the back of the paper. I found a picture of a pretty face in a magazine and pasted the face in the upper left corner. I fussy cut some flowers from the papers of some roses and pasted it in the top left corner to frame the face. I coloured some lace with Dylusions ink sprays to co-ordinate with the cover colours. I made a rosette for the ladyÒ€ℒs hair, and glued with a black felt flower and diamante. I also glued diamante below her right ear for earrings. When the Mod Podge was dry I used the Pilot Permaball to highlight the eyes and eyelashes.

I used texture paste tinted pale orange with acrylic paint, and thickly spread it over the flower stencil with a spatula, lifting up to reveal a textured flower design about where the dress would be. I also used the texture paste coloured scarlet to carefully fill in the lips. When dry (12hrs later) I applied Glossy accents Γ’β‚¬β€œ so the lips have a 3D effect!
I used letter cut outs and words for the title and year 2013. I used more coloured lace on the right edge border and a row of buttons glued with glossy accents across the bottom of the cover. I randomly stamped sayings and writing about the page for interest. I added a flower paperclip with a chain and key. I glued the paperclip only, leaving the key to dangle.
I edged the cover with washi tape (tissue tape) and with a brad attached a selection of textured wool strands and ribbon to the spine of the journal to use as page markers.
I used matt Mod Podge to coat the whole cover as a sealer. Leaving overnight to dry between coats (or use a dryer to speed the process). I used 3 coats of Mod Podge.
Handy Hint:-  There is usually a slight tackiness even when the Mod Podge is dry, to overcome this, spray finally with a coat of Matt Spray finishing sealer (use outdoors and avoid breathing the vapour) and leave outside to dry overnight. Happy art journaling!

Mixed Media Fun

Good Evening!

On Monday nights we hold Art Journalling classes in our workroom. (the class is full but we are taking names for the next group. Please register your interest)

The starter kit is awesome (even if I do say so myself). Everyone received a tote, gel medium, mixed media sampler kit from Faber Castell, 3 different background stamps + lots more. (the kit ended up being worth just over $120!) But the main item in the kit is the beautiful Dyan Reavely Art Journal.

Dylusions Journal

These journals are so beautiful that there is actually a certain Lady (you know who you are Mrs P!) who is extremely hesistant to use it. She just wants to look, feel and smell it! But she has promised next week one page MIGHT get covered with some gesso πŸ™‚

The whole kit + 6 weeks of classes costs $175.00 and is taught by the extremely talented Jenny. Her main aim is to push us all outside of our comfort zone and not to think.

We have a couple more Journals in stock – they are not listed online so please contact me if you would like to own one. They retail for $29.99

One of my favourite items to use on all mixed media has to be the Gelatos. Have you ever tried them? We have all the mix and match sets in stock (both online and in store).

Here is a short video demonstrating one of many techniques…

Aren’t they awesome?? There are many more techniques as well…I have a box of the colours in our workroom if you would like to see / touch them.

As well as the full gift box we also stock all of the mix and match sets. They can be found online by clicking here.

Also in stock or 2 different sizes of Pitt Pens. There is the skinny ones and the big brush. They can be found here.

New on the Web: Along with the gelatos and Pitt pens we have also just uploaded the Spectrum Noir Alcohol markers.

If you are looking for calligraphy pens, we do have various ones available from Faber-Castell but they are not listed online, just give me a ring / e-mail or drop in to the shop.

Wishing you all a very creative week….I need to try and finish 9 ATC cards by tomorrow night for a swap I’m in….

The countdown is on – 5 days to go!

Our shop has been buzzing this past week like a beehive. So much excitement and anticipation as our long awaited Mixed Media classes start on Thursday night! We have been promising  you since the craft fair in October (where Jenny’s Girl’s debuted) that we will teach you all the tricks and techniques and the time has finally come.

Can hardly believe we have so many people signed up! We will start off, with one class that is absolutely full, not even one spare space πŸ™‚ Second class is ready to follow and  people are also on the waiting list for a third, it is going to be so much fun! It excites us that you are so enthusiastic about it!
Why do an In-House workshop? Some people may mistakenly believe that there is no need to do an In-house workshop. There are a  lot of opinions about this. There are many ways to learn mixed media techniques, In-House and online are two of them.

If you like, you can spend your money on an online workshop, or even better, just watch techniques on YouTube, that’s free πŸ™‚ If that is what you prefer, then that’s fine, there are plenty of great tutorials out there and they are good.

We believe that running our own In- House workshops for mixed media, is the best option! We know this because, you, our awesome customers have asked for the workshops, which is fantastic  and it shows us that this is something you want to do!  There really is nothing better than getting together with a group of  people, socializing, making new friends and getting some hands on experience at the same time. When you go On line, you can SEE techniques, but in class  you will be able to experiment and gain experience. You don’t just see someone else having fun, you get to be the one having fun.

You could read a cook book, watch master chef or my kitchen rules, but there is nothing like cooking up a storm in your own kitchen and getting to eat the delicious food you make! It’s the same thing, you get to play, you get to experiment, you get to see what products you like and what you would like to spend your money on. On line you see someone use an art supply, so you go buy it, only to realize it isn’t as easy to master the technique at home, YouTube made it seem too easy! There is no use buying products that someone else suggests that you need, only to have them sit on your shelf. In our workshops you will get to play with products and then decide if it is something you would like to have as part of your “stash”.   On Line you can see someone use a product that you really want, only to find that no one in Australia sells the product you are after, how disappointing. In our workshop, you know that what we use, we stock! So you will never be disappointed.

Could you imagine if Tim Holtz or Donna Downey or any well know paper crafter/artist came to Geraldton to run an In-House workshop, (what fun!) They  come to impart some knowledge and share tips and to give us hands on experience. But, we decide not to go, because after all we could watch them on YouTube instead!? LOL, I can’t see that happening.

Nothing beats hands on experience.   That is why we are excited to see our plans come into fruition, that’s why our workshops are full and people are buzzing with anticipation. That is why we do what we do, all for the love of art and an itch to get in and play. I can’t wait!
The past 2 weeks Jenny and I have put our heads together and created some more fun and crafty classes which will be held as a one off. (That means no need to sign up for a whole term.) The SheArt class we held on Friday was the first of many. Make sure you are on our mailing list to be the first in the know as the classes are sure to fill up fast.

Enjoy the last day of the school holidays tomorrow (no break for me – I have a party of 15 girls in the shop tomorrow afternoon!) and 3 cheers for the start of a crafty term 2!

Crafty Fun and Play!

Did you know….
that many mixed media art techniques can also be used in scrapbooking, card making and paper crafting, as well as art journaling?

Want to know more?  If you do, then come and join us for a 10-week art workshop where we will get creative and get messy. ItÒ€ℒs all in good fun!

You will need to leave the inner perfectionist at home and be ready to
unleash some creativity. Despite what you may think – we are all creative and inside each one of us is an artist! For some of us, it is just about giving ourselves permission to play!

Each week you will Learn how to use all of those products you may have seen in the shop, or that you may have bought before, but never really knew what to do with.  You may be surprised to find out how many products actually have more than one use!

You will learn some new techniques and also brush up on some old, but good techniques that donÒ€ℒt date. Each week will be relaxed, fun-filled and technique-based. All classes will be hands-on and you will get to play and practise. It is the best way to learn!

You will finish the ten-week workshop by putting all of your-new found knowledge together and creating your very own art piece.

Class sizes will be limited, to maximise learning. If this interests you,  please contact the store to sign up as spaces will fill fast.
Classes start 26th April at 6.30pm.
A $50 deposit is required when booking to secure your place.
